Love & Honor
No no no, that’s not our new motto or anything like that, this is the English title of 武士の一分, the latest Yamada Yoji film, showing in Basel these days (in Japanese, yeah!). Werner & I took the opportunity of me having finished the thesis and went to cinema the other day to see this opus. I like Yamada’s samurai movies, as they seem to show a more realistic samurai life (well, what do I know, but anyway) in comparison to all these battle movies that are more common to this genre. This one was very subtle and beautiful. Not sure whether the baby enjoyed it or not, but I know for sure he/she was reacting to the experience, by kicking around throughout the 2 hour film! Oh, and this included a small natsukashii factor: the movie was made to some extent at least in Kyoto’s eigamura, a place I loved to go to as a kid.
